Tourism in Venezuela

Written by on January 3, 2019

Venezuela, despite its current social, economic and political crisis, is a fortunate country because of its geographical position, which is extremely convenient because it allows to have a huge diversity in terms of different landscapes, climates, abundance in mineral resources, the variety of animals as well as flora and natural attractions internationally recognized. In Venezuela you can find mountains, beaches, snowy areas, deserts, jungle, rivers and plains, all in the same country that makes it an attractive tourist destination for any type of traveler (especially for those who have many dollars, due to the country’s current inflation rate).

I’m going to present some of the most interesting tourist spots in Venezuela that also allows highlighting the variety I mentioned:

  • Salto Angel: It is the highest waterfall in the world according to the Guinness record book and the main tourist spot in Venezuela. Probably, you recognize it from a movie, song or book since it has been an inspiration for many artistic manifestations.
  • Los Roques: it is the largest coral reef in the Caribbean and one of the most beautiful beaches in Latin America, with almost paradisiacal characteristics due to its whitish sands and its clear and calm waters.
  • Dunes of Coro: it is an environment similar to a desert in the Middle East located in the state of Falcón, which can be crossed by car because they have roads that allow cross the dunes. Movies, music videos and photo sessions have used this place as a stage.
  • Hato Piñero: located in the Cojedes state, is the best representation of what is the culture of the Venezuelan plain. Here you can find all the customs, gastronomy, activities and other things typical of the region. The Hato Piñero has a particularity in terms of the fauna that can be found in it and is that there are from anacondas to jaguars.
  • Merida Cableway: within the mountainous and snowy landscape of the Merida state, we find the famous cableway which, it should be noted, is the highest and the longest in the world. It is a very pleasant experience, especially for those who enjoy this type of cold places.
  • Colonia Tovar: this small and picturesque town set in a typical German city due to the structure of the houses and its origin (it was founded by Germans), is a quiet place within the beauty of the cold of the area.
  • Teresa Carreño Theater: It is the main stage for the most important events and artistic representations in the country; its structure combines the classic with the modern architecture. A point of visit almost mandatory if you visit Caracas.

Venezuela has a very high tourism potential and because of the current (and hopefully temporary) difficulties in the country, this potential is not close to being achieved. However, and as it was presented in the article, there are some places (many tourist spots in the country) that are worth visiting for different reasons and they are definitely worth your time.
