Queen is set to rock the Oscars

Written by on February 24, 2019

There are far too many uncertainties concerning this year’s Academy Awards, and it has really been a bulky road. So many controversies have been around the show that the fact that they will not be having a host has been set aside.

They’ve announced a cut from the running time of the show but keep going back on their words. However, some of these doubts have been clarified for better or for worse, and this time it is certainly for the better. There were some early rumors claiming that Queen would be making an appearance at the 91st Academy Awards, but they had been completely scrapped off… Until now.

Most people thought that even though the band’s biopic (or rather Freddie Mercury’s biopic) is one of the main contenders at this year awards ceremony with five nominations including Best Picture, the band itself actually had no need to play on stage since it isn’t nominated to any award. However, this week Adam Lambert confirmed the presentation via Twitter, confirming that the band will, in fact, play at the awards ceremony.

Adam Lambert has been filling up Freddie’s place as lead singer for the band by a few years now, so getting a confirmation from him is the real deal, later that night the Academy themselves confirmed it too. However, they did not mention at which time the band will play, so unless it is right at the beginning of the show, you’ll have to sit through the entire ceremony to hear some Queen.

Usually the ceremony award opens up with some sort of monologue or sketch, of course, completely movie-related”, however, due to the event not having any host this year to bind the show together, it is very uncertain how things will start up, so having Queen open the show would be something completely new and different to the past years.

It would also be odd to go together with the nominees for Best Original Song, due to Queen obviously not being nominated. However, it was previously announced that The Academy would cut from the show all but two of the nominees for these awards, but due to some heavy backlash they were practically forced to bring them all back, even though rumors say that they will only get around 90 seconds per nominee instead of being able to play the whole song.

Most of these cuts from the show are made in order to make the ceremony shorter, in a huge effort to bring up the audience number again after just having its worst two years in a row in the past couple years. Being in an all-time-low and critical audience number, it is expected to see some changes made to the ceremony as a whole this year.

Needless to say, having a band biopic nominated to so many awards is rather unusual, however, with Queen everything is. Earning almost $1 billion, the movie is the most successful biopic ever worldwide, and it is expected to earn at least a couple of the categories it is nominated on. The ceremony will take place this Sunday 24, so be ready to rock one more time with Queen!
