The Art of Living

For those that might not be familiar with them, Fire and Flesh are an extreme Metal band from San Diego that started out in the early 2010s and they have gone on to produce a couple of interesting works, with the most notable being 2017’s In Blood We Trust. They are originally from the Bay Area and you can see some of that classic Thrash influence on that particular release.

The band has released a couple of EPs here and there since In Blood We Trust, but now they are releasing a new single called The Art of Living, which marks their first production in 2020 and I have to say that it is a fairly enjoyable track, with a lot worth analyzing.

From the very first seconds we can already tell that the guitar playing is top notch and that is going to become a constant throughout the song, often adding more melodic and extreme elements as the track progresses, which is something that shows that the band has grown from the sheer intensity of their 2017 release.

The vocals are as aggressive as you can expect from a band of this caliber, but they also have a place for a more melodic approach on the final third of the track. This is something that is often hit or miss for me because I think melodic and aggressive vocals don’t always mesh well, but here it does quite well and it’s a testament to how the band has been improving as musicians.

But I think the most important aspect of this song is how good the rhythm changes are, often switching from fast-pace to more mid-tempo and a bit of slower parts here and there. It’s a sign of a much tighter and confident band, with a much greater understanding of what they can do with their instruments.

Overall, I think this is a very interesting release and a testament to a band that is improving and growing in recent years. I certainly hope to hear more about them in the near future.
