Captain Marvel, great power with great controversies

Written by on March 14, 2019

Whenever a new Marvel movie comes out it is like the whole world stops for a moment to see what’s going to happen about it, whether it will be great or a mess. Usually, they make a big deal in the charts, and sometimes they become more popular due to their controversies than the actual movies themselves, sadly this just might be the case for this title,

Captain Marvel is the first Marvel Cinematic Universe film with a female superhero as the lead character, starting there you can already see that controversies were on the way.

Now that Marvel has created the biggest movies in popularity terms, maybe of all time, they also have become some sort of cultural movement for inclusion, telling the whole world that they can be heroes too. And while sometimes intentions are good, you have to choose wisely the right way to put these intentions on the field.

The movie itself is actually huge, rewriting a lot of things in the already set Marvel Cinematic Universe in order to go ahead and make as clear as possible that Captain Marvel is the strongest and pretty much the most important hero in the MCU is not something very wise, this was a decision appealing the public opinion and the cultural movement they’re trying to embrace rather than keeping up the story and the universe they0ve been creating for over 10 years now.

Big premiere?

But not only the plot of the movie is controversial of course, powers as big as Captain Marvel’s call up for way bigger controversies than those. The sales are up to some odd numbers, the premiere gave Marvel almost $100 million less than what they were expecting for the premiere. But all of the sudden, Disney is claiming that the movie is one of the biggest launches in MCU history, claiming that it is a success worldwide, however, those numbers don’t correspond to the public reception of the movie, which leads us to the next controversy.

People loved it!

Or didn’t they? … well, not really, but that’s not what it may appear online. The world-known movie critique website pulled some sketchy moves regarding the audience’s reviews of the movie. While at the premiere the audience as a majority gave the movie an average of 33%, the website started deleting negative reviews of the movie. And by deleting over 50 thousand reviews they managed to pull up the numbers a little, and now they are pretty much deleting most of the negative comments around, and massively reposting repeated positive reviews from different “reviewers” in order to give the movie some better numbers.

Great main character

While the character itself is pretty oddly written, with blank personality and issues with keeping the character, we’re talking about the controversies here, and since we’ve already mentioned the rewriting of the whole MCU in order to revolve around Captain Marvel. We are going to talk about the controversies of Brie Larson

The star 2015’s Room is now pretty much a literal star in this film. But she has made some rather strong remarks and declarations around since starting the movie. Protesting how it is hard for women and women of color to get jobs in the movie industry, she has also been non-stop insulting the movie critics and audience that go and watch movies that are not targeted at them.

These declarations are not light most of the time, and she has a big responsibility now as the first female superhero with a lead role in the MCU, and she seems to be a little abusive with power, it is up to the audience however react to all that’s surrounding the movie, but for the time being, it seems that Captain Marvel’s main villain is the controversies, so there’s a long road ahead.
