Introduction

Thyroid is a large ductless gland in the neck which secretes hormones regulating growth and development through the rate of metabolism. The thyroid secretes several hormones act throughout the body, influencing metabolism, growth and development, and body temperature. During this process, infancy and childhood, adequate thyroid hormone is crucial for brain development.

What Is Thyroid Disease?

Thyroid diseases are many but we would like to talk about the major ones which affect it ;

Hashimoto’s Disease;

An autoimmune disease i.e. your immune system inappropriately attacks your own thyroid gland. This kind of disease normally causes inflammation and gradual destruction of your thyroid gland every time. To most people, hashimoto disease can cause phases of over activity, which is known as hyperthyroidism.

Graves’ disease;

This type of disease is an autoimmune disease where your immune system inappropriately produces antibodies, which is usually known as thyroid stimulating antibodies (TSI). These antibodies overstimulate your thyroid gland and cause overproducing to thyroid hormone.

Thyroid Cancer

This includes cancer that develops in the thyroid gland. Thyroid cancer is severally found in nodules (fluid-filled or solid lumps) and develops when cells change or mutate.

There are four main types of thyroid cancer which are listed below;

Papillary Thyroid Cancer;

This is one of the most dangerous thyroid cancer that occurs in up to 75% of all thyroid cancer cases. It tends to grow slowly but often spreads to the nymph nodes in your neck, even though you have like 80% chances of recovery.

Follicular Thyroid Cancer;

The chances of this type of cancer are between 5% and 20% of all thyroid cancers in the United States. It can spread into your lymph nodes and is also more likely to spread into your blood vessels

Ana-plastic Thyroid Cancer;

Ana-plastic thyroid cancer can be the most severe type because it’s aggressive in spreading to other parts of the body. It is very scarce but it is the worst type of thyroid cancer that is difficult to treat.

Medullary Thyroid Cancer;

This is a type of thyroid cancer that is more likely to be found at an early stage because it produces the hormone called calcitonin, which doctors can find out in blood results.

Which are The Treatments for Thyroid Cancer?

There are many ways of treating thyroid cancer. The treatment you get will surely depend on the type and stage of the cancer. Below are the ways to treat.

Surgery;

Surgery is the most widely used method of treating thyroid cancer. If the entire thyroid gland is removed, it is known as thyroidectomy. The surgery may also include of removing lymph nodes in the neck area, and tissue around the thyroid gland but it depends on the location of the tumor.

Thyroid Hormone Therapy;

If all the thyroid gland is removed, you will take thyroid hormone pills. The pills also stop leftover cancer cells from growing and returning. They do this by lowering the level of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH).
